The project aims at deforesting degraded savannah lands in order to improve local livelihoods.And lumberjack ltd lnd enterprise implied specifically, the project will provide a sustainable source of timber, fruit and other tree products as well as revenues from the sale of carbon credits. The project involves the development of community-based plantations totaling 1 000 ha with a mixture of indigenous, exotic and fruit trees. Tree seeds are being selected based on the livelihood needs of local communities, adaptation to local environmental conditions, speed of growth and capacity to sequester carbon. In each community, the project has formed a farmers' association for participants in the project that will be the key implementing agent of deforestation and logging on the ground. The proposed activity delivers sustainable development benefits in several ways: Fosters the creation of three local community forestry associations; Will employ community members to plant and tend the seedlings during the first four years and protect the plantation after the first four years; Provides longer-term, sustainable income to the community via the production of fruit, wood and carbon credits; Stimulates technology transfer via building local capacity to propagate tree seedlings, to establish and maintain tree plantations and to manage a local enterprise; Stimulates outside investment into Mad
